Go ahead and be political, but people will get sick of you

Smokey and the bandit, it's time for another column! I could have made writing the column for this issue a lot easier on myself. If I had ended my last one with, "To be continued…" then I just could have written another one about stuff that happened on spring break. But stupid me, I didn't think of that, and now I have to come up with something original.

So a lot of folks weren't happy on Thursday when President Bush held a press conference, interrupting prime time television to address a number of issues, most notably Social Security.

Well, you know what I say? I say, we asked for it.

The "Rock the Vote" people have been ramming this "I Heart Social Security" garbage down the throats of the American youth, demanding the issue be addressed. Surprise, surprise, idiots, it was addressed. Sorry it was inconvenient for you.

"Uh, we're sorry, Mr. President. Thursday night just isn't good for us. If you could just reschedule it or simply schedule it around The OC, that would be super."

But please, don't get me wrong. I'm incredibly happy that people reacted the way they did.

The real "Rock the Vote" crowd has been exposed. This recent event has just proven that, lest P. Diddy forget, these are teen-agers he's trying to preach to. I find it extremely comforting to know that my peers haven't become a bunch of politics-obsessed nut jobs.

Have we forgotten who we are? When did this become about hating each other and loving politicians and talking heads? When did we become so obsessed with being taken seriously by adults that we're now wearing T-shirts expressing how much we adore Social Security?

If wanting to watch a TV show sounds more appealing to me than listening to reporters ask the president about Social Security for an hour, then I'm sorry, Mr. Informed, I guess I'm an ignorant teen-ager.

Yes, originally I wasn't happy when I saw the away messages written by my friends on Instant Messenger, voicing their dismay for the president interrupting their shows. But now that I think about it, this is really a step in the right direction.

Can't we all just go back to thinking politics is boring and go kick it? Please? 'Cause I'm down. I'm down for kickin' it.
