As runners from other schools are taking their marks, Hoban's boys track and field team is struggling to keep up.

A tri-meet against Walsh and Stow proved to be tough competition. Walsh won with 82 points, Stow scored 73, and Hoban came in third with 20. Senior Scott Eastbourn raked in points for first place in discus, throwing 143 feet, 1 inch. Senior Tyrell Sutton placed first in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.7. He also took first with a time of 48.1 in the 300-meter hurdles.

"Some may think its just jumping over the hurdle," Sutton said, "but hurdling is a hard technique to come by."

Coach Jeff Reynolds was pleased with the wins.

"We had some good individual performances, considering the weather," he said. "We are improving every week. Therefore our confidence will continue to grow."

At the Dover Invitational April 2, the team placed seventh overall with 28 points.

Senior Jeff Thomas was satisfied with the invitational.

"The Dover Invitational went well, despite the weather conditions," he said. "The times were real slow due to the rain and cold."

Thomas runs the 800 meters, 4x400 and the 4x800. Individually he hopes to improve.

"I need to work on my endurance," he said. "But it is still early in the season, so I'm not expecting greatness just yet. But I will be expecting it from myself and the team as well in the future."

Sutton placed first in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.93.

"My trail leg was dragging, and I was clipping the hurdles," he said.

He then ran the 300-meter hurdles and placed second with a time of 42.41.

"The runner in front of me ran a 40.9," he said. "And it's still early in the season. I think I still did well, despite the weather."

The team lost St. Thomas Aquinas April 5.

Sophomore Ben Wartko runs the 4x100 and the 4x200.

"We need to improve our relay teams' hand-offs," he said. "I need to get to faster, and my times need to drop. As a team we practice hard. We hope to recover from our injuries."

Hoban participated in Ellet's Big E Invitational April 9, scoring 8 points.

A home meet against St. Vincent-St. Mary April 12 was another loss. Eastbourn placed first in the shot put. Junior Mike Walker took two seconds, in the discus and shot put, scoring 6 points.

Reynolds thinks the team has much to improve on.

"Our team needs to improve on our confidence as a whole," he said. "One of our stronger points is our sense of togetherness."
