New American flags needed in all classrooms New American flags needed in all classrooms

Symbols abound in classrooms. After all, what would a chemistry room be without a periodic table, or a history room without a map? However, one symbol is missing from some classrooms at Hoban--the American flag.

Many classrooms, including all those in the science wing, lack an American flag. In those where it is present, the flag is often old or in poor condition. Apparently all classrooms once had flags, since brackets for holding a flag can be found in most of the classrooms. Most likely, the disappearance of the flags happened gradually, as walls were repainted, classrooms changed hands and furniture was moved. Flags have been taken down and simply not put back up. We think each classroom should have a flag, and those in disrepair should be replaced.

Putting new flags in every room would not cost very much. Flags are relatively inexpensive. The funds for the flags could be supplied by a student council project or by asking area businesses or individuals to donate money for this cause. Our research has shown that many schools, including universities such as Central Florida State, have been successful in raising funds, even when student organizations lack the means or the willingness to buy flags for every classroom.

Putting American flags in every classroom and replacing the old ones would not be jingoistic. It would serve as a reminder of rights that are important for a healthy educational environment and remind us of the solidarity we share with people around the nation. Replacing those that are old would be respectful and would make the rooms look neater.

New American flags should be placed in every classroom. We recommend a student-run drive to raise the funds. It is a simple act that would be both patriotic and appropriate.
