Returning to school today, students may notice some changes--and not just to their schedules.

Over the summer months, many enhancements have been made to the facilities of Dowed Field. The most noticeable improvement was made to the playing field itself. An artificial (ProGrass) turf has been installed, which can now be used for soccer and lacrosse as well as football.

Brother Kenneth Haders, school president, explained that upgrading the field was "the most economical way to provide a good surface for all sports with the limitations of our property."

He said the new turf provides a safer playing surface, helping prevent injuries. A better drainage system allows for play directly after a sudden rainstorm. Maintenance costs should decrease dramatically, since it will not need to be mowed, rolled or reseeded.

With the changes, bleacher seating will now be available to spectators at soccer and lacrosse games.

The press box will also be remodeled.

An additional feature of the Dowed Field improvement project is a new concession stand and spirit store. The structure will also house new men's and women's restrooms.

The entire cost of the undertaking is around $1.3 million, which will come from the gifts of individuals, corporations and foundations.

The stadium, however, is not the only scene of major improvements.

Phase 4 of the electrical program was completed this summer. Previous phases included the installation of new lighting, ceiling fans and electrical outlets in classrooms. A drop ceiling was constructed on the third floor to cover electrical wiring. This summer, classrooms that did not receive ceiling fans, lighting and outlets last year now have them. A drop ceiling was also created for the main floor as well.

As you pass through the stairways, you will notice UFO-like objects hovering overhead. You aren't being abducted; these are just the newest lighting fixtures that have been installed.

According to Haders, the four-year electrical upgrade program cost an estimated $1.2 million.

The library has been recarpeted, and the walkway through the library between the main building and the science wing has been tiled.

Additional computers have been purchased. New this year will be a writing center in the library, which will have an English teacher available every period during the school day to assist students.

Both gymnasiums also received some attention during the summer months. A somewhat lighter Barry Gym received a paint job during vacation. Next door, the Alumni Gym's hardwood floors were resealed.

Lastly, the chapel and the Holy Cross Room have new heating and cooling systems, which will come in handy in these final months of summer.
