Taking responsibility for one's actions is a mark of maturity

Dear Cowards,

I am writing this letter to the vandals who have not confessed and to those who have not turned them in. As a senior, I, along with all my other innocent classmates, have been just as affected by the reprisals as a result of your bad choices as you have.

When you brought the Superglue to the senior lock-in, your intention was to damage property. You knew what you were going to do with it. You also knew the actions you were about to undertake were wrong and intentionally harmful. And yet, even after the principal's speech about respect and school pride, you still decided to have a little fun and pull the ultimate prank.

Undoubtedly, some people know the identity of the vandals. You are just as responsible for these punishments as the vandals. The fact that you are covering for them or attempting to protect them reflects your lack of common sense and respect for the other members of your class.

Now, as a result of your actions, the entire senior class is being punished. Our senior privileges have been suspended until you turn yourself or your conspirators in, and if this never happens, they are suspended permanently.

I ask you to think about this, and I hope it is not too difficult, because I am unaware of where your morals now stand. The entire senior class is being punished for your pusillanimous actions. The football players, who weren't even in the building when the vandalism was committed, are being punished. Three-fourths of the seniors, who were decorating other parts of the school and were unaware of what you were doing, are being punished. If you are looking for a way to turn the entire senior class against you, you are doing an excellent job.

Consider the administration. Their trust and respect for you has been diminished. And while they have not lost respect for the whole class, the frustration they are facing has them questioning the possibility of future lock-ins.

Furthermore, and possibly most importantly, we lost trust in each other. Who would have thought that something intended to build class unity could turn the entire class against a few spineless people? We are supposed to be united, and your insensitive actions have ripped our class apart with a witch-hunt of accusations and frustrations.

I ask you, did you ever think that the actions you planned would lead to this--to our privileges being revoked and the future of senior lock-in uncertain?

I hope you are happy. You have committed more than a harmless prank; your actions have caused us all to be punished. Congratulations.
