Season going well for boys golf, placing in tourneys
Advertising
Competing two hours away, the boys golf team won the Granville Invitational by five strokes. Senior Chase Helmling led the way with a 74, worthy of second-place medalist. The Knights shot 319 as a team.

Hoban will finish out its season with matches against the Copley Indians and a league rival, the Padua Bruins.

A key match against league opponents Elyria Catholic, Trinity and Elyria Sept. 9 turned in the Knights' favor with a score of 308. Senior Pat Justice led the way with a score of 76. With another important league match against Padua Franciscan Sept. 12, both teams fought their way to a tie. The Knights were led by junior Jake Baranek, who shot a low round of 40.

The Knights tried to get back on the winning side against Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy Sept. 14. In a close match, the Royals prevailed 159-162. In the close defeat the team was led by Baranek and fellow junior Sam Scala with rounds of 39.

The all-important Walsh Invitational Sept. 16 was a tough task for the Knights, and they finished in 16th place. The finish was disappointing for Hoban, because it was played on its home course, Good Park.

The Knights wanted to rebound in the biggest event of the year, the North Coast League Tournament Sept. 20. The team came up big in the tournament, shooting a 317 and marching to a second-place finish, behind only Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin. Baranek led the way with a round of 76, which earned him first team All-Conference. Senior Chase Helmling, junior Aaron Dodgson and Scala earned second team All-Conference.

Baranek was surprised by ND-CL's round of 316.

"They had a fluke round," Baranek said. "Some of their players really surprised me. The conditions were pretty rough in the morning. It was cold and raining. Our team didn't execute on a few shots, which may have cost us in the end."

Sectionals are Oct. 5 at Good Park.
