Unity is a community coming together for a sole purpose. On Saturday, Sept. 9, Hoban's Knights of Unity, led by moderator Tom Hottinger, gathered for the two-mile Unity Walk. The festivities in downtown Akron were organized by Coming Together Akron.

It was much more than just a walk and gathering. The homeless were fed, and new friends were made. The event started at 10 a.m. with music playing and the Greater Akron community coming together with the homeless.

Twelve businesses sponsored the event, including Akron Children's Hospital, Target and Acme Fresh Markets. Members from local religious congregations, other organizations and businesses represented their groups at the event. For example, employees from Children's Hospital gathered with the community for the walk throughout downtown. Mayor Don Plusquellic attended the event along with DJs from WONE-FM and WZIP-FM. The mayor gave a speech on how important the event was.

Ten members of Hoban's Knights of Unity participated. Hottinger was pleased with the attendance, not only by his group, but by the whole community.

"I was happy about our turnout at the event," he said. "I am glad to know our kids will participate in such an event to celebrate and support diversity in Akron."

Junior Tyechia Young had a positive outlook on the event.

"The community walk was better than I thought it would be," she said. "It was a good turnout, and the people from Coming Together were helpful with providing us with water and snacks during and after the event."

After the walk, there were many other things to do. Acme supplied snacks and water for the participants, and different culture tables were set up. Each of the culture tables was hosted by a teenager representing the country the table was about. The students made poster boards with pictures and information that describe their countries. Aside from the culture tables, the main event of the gathering was Akron Idol, similar to TV's American Idol. Many people took part in the contest, which involved a lot of laughter and fun.

The Coming Together project celebrates diversity, whether cultural or religious. It organizes various events yearly, including an annual Akron Aeros game. The events are meant for people of diverse backgrounds to come together.
