Bug infestation can be a problem at just about any school, even here at Hoban. Students might notice cockroaches and other insects in the locker rooms and even some classrooms and think that our school is being taken over, but actually it is quite the opposite.

While the bugs are noticeable, the staff is doing a good job to ensure the pests do not become a major problem. The school has a monthly appointment with an exterminator to be sprayed, which causes the bugs to come out first, then die. This is why the bugs seem more noticeable at certain times than others. Undoubtedly any building is going to have insects, especially one that is close to 50 years old. Therefore, the administration is taking the right steps to keep them under control.

To keep the bugs at an absolute minimum, though, the students have to help somewhat too. For instance, they should not leave food or drinks in lockers, because this attracts bugs, especially if the food starts to spoil or the drink spills. As long as students adequately clean up after themselves and try to keep the school looking presentable, this will cut down on the insects. Also, students are urged to report any extraordinary bug sightings to the faculty. If someone sees one ant crawling on the windowsill in the classroom, don't automatically run and call the Orkin Man. But if a considerable infestation of insects is seen in a certain part of the building, it would be appreciated if the staff were made aware of the problem.

The administration realizes the presence of bugs in our school and does its best to ensure they are kept at a minimum.
