Every Wednesday after school girls are training for a 5K run on the spring.

“Girls with Sole is a group of girls who want to talk about problems that they have. When we meet, we talk about nutrition, self-esteem and creating a healthy lifestyle because everything we look at or listen to is about image,” teacher and founder of Girls with Sole, Lisa Short said.

The club has slowly been growing and, every week, members involved write down a goal to work towards that week in their journals.

“For a beginner to train to run a 5K it takes roughly eight to ten weeks,” teacher Karen Hagerty said.

A 5K is not five miles. A 5K is roughly 3.1 miles running or walking outside.

“Girls with Sole is not strictly running. Some girls run outside and some run inside depending on the girls’ fitness level,” Short said, “Some days when weather is bad we may go in the weight room but that will not be often.”

This club is not strictly working out and running.

“Girls with Sole was brought to Fraser because teachers wanted an outlet for girls to talk and didn’t want girls to feel alone and wanted to promote a healthy lifestyle,” Short said.

These teachers want to inspire the girls at FHS. Hagerty, a marathon runner, has run 14 marathons and is training for her 15th in May.

“I run because I love feeling fit. My dad and husband are good role models and keep me running,” Hagerty said.

Julie Hill, a senior, joined Girls with Sole when she heard about it from her friends.  There is a variety of classmen in the group.

“I would like to get in shape and stay in shape. My goal is to run the 5K come spring time,” Hill said.

Any girl can join Girls with Sole as long as they have or get a physical. Visit Mrs. Short in room 1702 to fill out a survey or visit the Fraser Girls with Sole page on Facebook for more information.
