Of all the sports teams, the varsity volleyball squad is set apart from the rest: the program boasts eight seniors on a team of only 12.
With only six players on the court at one time, having so many seniors will be a major advantage for the team, coached by Yolanda Whitehead.
With this advantage the team has the opportunity to fine tune their technique, placing them leagues above other teams.
“We have practiced together more than other teams,” said senior Domonique Mitchell. “We are more experienced players.”
Having athletes with more advanced skill levels raises the competition level in practice and in games creating a more meaningful practice.
This is the last year and last chance to win it all for the eight seniors players.
“We’re trying to win the championship,” Mitchell said. “We’re trying to win states.”
To make the championship game, they will first have to get past tough opponents in their district such as the Leto Falcons and the Plant Panthers, who they lost to twice last season.
The team opens up the regular season in the beginning of September and as usual, they will look to start the season well with a win against Middleton.
When the players face their toughest opponents, they will look to one thing for sure to set them apart for the victory: their seniors.
