Phone calls are nonexistent, texting is overrated, Facebook will soon be unused just like MySpace and, as for blogging, who really has enough free time to write anymore? So if all of these are going to become things of the past, then we have to come up with something to tell all our friends the important and not so important details of our life. Never fear, Twitter is here.

Twitter, a free social networking & micro blogging service, was created back in 2006 by Jack Dorsey. Twitter enables its users to send and receive each other’s updates, known as Tweets. The possibilities of tweeting are endless, as long as you can type what you want to say in fewer than 140 characters. Don’t worry if you have something to say to someone that is a little bit more personal, you can still direct message them privately. When Twitter was first created it was made for the ages of 35-49; however, in the past 12 months, the 18-24 age group usage has jumped 30% according to a study done by Twitter. Think teens are the only ones using Twitter? Think again. Businesses, celebrities, news channels, and even schools are jumping on the band wagon of tweeting.

Many celebrities use their Twitter accounts to keep their fans up to date with their concerts, recent awards, and even where they are around the world. Businesses tend to use Twitter to inform their clients about new products & have even started posting links to coupons. “I had no idea that the school even had a Twitter page,” says Heather Carney, a student at Seckman High School.  Almost every school has a website, but Twitter makes it easier to post all events and news about a school in one easy place. Seckman hasn’t had a Twitter account for long, but it has definitely become popular and well known throughout the school. More and more schools are starting to run a Twitter account to help students, staff, parents, and the public access all the school’s information in one place.

In 2006, the world was blessed with the beautiful new social networking site we call Twitter, and since then it has blown up all over the world. There were many doubts in the beginning on whether or not Twitter would live up to the legacy that is Facebook. However, thanks to celebs, teens, and businesses, Twitter has made its mark on the social networking list. Who knows, Twitter could potentially even pass Facebook in popularity soon. Twitter may not be around for the rest of our lives, but it has definitely made a huge impact on the way we share our ideas and opinions.
