Many students who participate in sports not offered in the school curriculum go unnoticed at RHS. The Colonel interviewed three students of three different out-of-school sports to show there’s talent within the school that is often not recognized.

Sophomore Billie Paulus
Horseback riding

The Colonel: How often do you spend time doing your sport?
Billie Paulus: I practice about three times a week and have competitions about every one to two months.

TC: How long have you been doing your sport?
BP: Eight years.

TC: What do you enjoy most about your sport?
BP: Spending time with my horse and competitions are really fun. The whole sport is really rewarding.

TC: What are the hardest things about yours port?
BP: Time I’m given. I could devote so much more time to horseback-riding but it’s hard because of Exped and school – it’s killing.

TC: Do you plan to take your sport further than high school?
BP: I’m going to look into Equitation at Finlay. Horse back riding is kind of a life long thing.

TC: What are some things about yours port that you wish other people knew about?
BP: That it is definitely a sport. People don’t always realize the connection both inside and outside the saddle, it takes a lot of time and is a lot of work [but] it’s a really amazing experience.

Junior Marty Manning
Snowboarding

The Colonel: How often do you snowboard?
Martin Manning: I try at least twice a week.

TC: How long have you been snowboarding?
MM: Seven years, since fourth grade.

TC: What do you enjoy most about your sport?
MM: Being outside and hanging out with friends.

TC:
What are the hardest things about your sport?
MM: Learning new tricks and perfecting them. Also getting your own style put into the trick.

TC: What are some things that you wish other people knew about?
MM: Definitely not the way people perceive it to be. It’s a lot of fun; you really get to learn about other people.

TC: What are some cool places that you have had the opportunity to board?
MM: I’ve been to Big Boulder and Camelback.

Sophomore Zach Shannon
Fencing

The Colonel: How often do you attend practice and competitions for fencing?
Zack Shannon: I practice three to five times a week and I attend competitions one to three times a month. Some [competitions] are held out of state or in different cities in Ohio.

TC: What do you enjoy most about your sport?
ZS: Competitions are enjoyable. I got into it at a summer camp I went to.

TC: What are the hardest things about your sport?
ZS: The foot work because it takes a lot of time and practice.

TC: What are some things about your sport that you wish other people knew about?
ZS: That it’s not just about swinging a sword around, and that it’s all in the legs and wrist.

TC:
Do you plan to take your sport farther than high school?
ZS: Yes, there are a lot of schools that have clubs and you could also get...scholarships.
