The start of the school year is here, bringing with it new possibilities, goals, and people, including German exchange students. About twenty students came from Germany, being matched with corresponding guides to help them throughout the school. Andrea Stefaniuk and Eric Morgan are supervising the students. They flew in from Germany on a 16-hour flight. Soon after, they flew to New York for fun and sightseeing. They saw skyscrapers, hotdog stands, “The Lion King” on Broadway, which they exceptionally enjoyed, having seen it in Germany beforehand. Some also went to Cedar Point. The Colonel sat down with five exchange students and asked them about their stay in America so far.

The Colonel: Did you do anything interesting while you were out of town?
Sarah Bauerle & Dorothee Baur: “Yes, we went to Cedar Point.”
TC: Are any of you going to stay behind?
SB & DB: “No, we all are going to be going back.”
TC: What did you like most about your trip here?
SB & DB: “We liked the people, just getting to be with them. And the ambience of being in a place where you can be yourself.”
TC: Do you like any sports?
SB & DB: “We like badminton and soccer.”

The Colonel: Are you enjoying your time in America?
Wiebke Heinemann: “Yes, I am enjoying it.”
TC: What are your interests?
WH: “My interests are sports, reading, and hanging out with friends.”
TC: When are you going back?
WH: “October 24th.”
TC: What did you think of New York?
WH: “It was big. There were a lot of people and it was really crowded. But other than that, we had a great time. “
TC: Is this the first time you have traveled?
WH: “No, I have traveled around Europe many times.”
TC: Have you had fun while you have been here?
WH: “Yes, we have done many fun things, we went to see “The Lion King” on Broadway.”

The Colonel: What did you think of New York, being such a big city?
Sonja Rieth & Maren Reuter: “Huge. We couldn’t believe the city had such massive buildings. It was almost overwhelming. And the shopping centers are much better than in Germany. “
TC: Were you scared of going to a different school?
SR & MR: “The schools here are a little different than they are in Germany. We are still working on our English.”
TC: Despite the differences, are the schools here and the schools in Germany the same?
SR & MR: “Yes, besides a few differences, we operate the same. There is still gossip, groups, and tests. We have later closing dates, but we have to be at school for the same amount of time.”
TC: Does the food vary from here and Germany?
SR & MR: “Yes, the food here is the same type of thing, but with a few exceptions. Here it is the same, almost repetitious.”

The Colonel: Why did you do the exchange program?
Sebastian Halle: “I think just because I wanted to come here.”
TC: Is America what you thought it would be?
SH: “Yes and no.”
TC: What are the major differences between Germany and the U.S.?”
SH: “Foods, family, how school goes on.”
TC: Do you like being here?
SH: “Yes, of course.”
TC: Would you do it again if you could?
SH: “Yeah, I think, cause then I could do other things.”
TC: What is your favorite food from America?
SH: “Chipotle.”
