At-a-glance

During last Friday's daytime rally, junior Alexis Medina led the varsity cheerleading squad in their opening performance. The rally included a talk show skit, sports relay and highlight of the winter sports. The only students allowed into the gym were those whose sixth period teacher signed them up to attend. In the future, ASB hopes to increase student attendance by putting on the same rally twice in a single day. PHOTO BY ERIN LUND -

The senior ran in to the song “Boys Wanna Be Her” and made her way to the center. She danced. She moved to it. She made the crowd get pumped up, shouting like a pack of wild monkeys.

Getting the students to interact with the activities was the main goal of Karla Gomez and her classmate. The Associated Student Body also wanted to celebrate the successes of the winter sports.

The rally began with the playing of the national anthem by the band and the singing of the alma mater by the choir.

ASB wanted to connect the rally with a central theme so they planned a talk show similar to “Maury” where misbehaving students were sent to boot camp.

To go along with the skit, the varsity cheerleaders were introduced as bad girls now behaving because of their appearance on the “Shan and Nicole” show.

Assistant Principal Chris Goodwin then introduced the “real” troublemakers, the kids who were constantly in his office. “They are the students we call frequent flyers,” he said.

Tidwell asked the delinquents why they got in trouble. Junior Brandon Brockl responded, “Because I can.” The crowd ooooed and responded by standing or pointing. “I felt like a gangsta,” he said, after playing the role.

During the show’s commercials, the winter coaches said a few words about their teams and their successes. The teams were celebrated as a whole with a humorous relay race between the sport teams.

ASB and administration were both pleased with the daytime rally, something that Stagg hasn’t had in many years. “I think they did a great job,” Student Leadership advisor Matt Soeth said. “It flowed very well.”

For the future Soeth wishes to continue having sports rallies celebrating all the seasons along with academic ones encouraging students to do their best on the state tests.
