Franz Ferdinand’s new album “You Could Have It So Much Better” was a disappointment. The first time I heard their new hit “Do You Want To,” I couldn’t help but dance and sing along. My brother and I will stop everything when we the song comes on the radio just so we can dance along to it. So I thought that the new CD would be as upbeat and exciting as their hit.

But I was let down; especially compared to their first album “Franz Ferdinand,” which has the fast-paced, exciting lyrics and music I had expected. The new album just isn’t the same Franz Ferdinand from barely a year ago.

The song “Fade Together” makes me sick with lyrics like “Once you have loved someone this much you doubt it could fade, despite how much you’d like it to. God how you’d like it to fade. Let’s fade together, let’s fade forever.” I couldn’t believe this was the same band that wrote songs like “Eyes, burning a way through me, Overwhelm, destroying so sweetly. Now, there is a fire within me: a fire that burns. This fire is out of control. I’m going to burn this city, burn this city.”

But “You Could Have It So Much Better” isn’t all bad. “I’m Your Villain” has a firm, strong drum beat that is reminiscent of the old album. “Do You Want To” and “The Fallen” are of the catchiest songs on the CD. Kind of reminds me of “Take Me Out” from their first album, but that’s probably why I like it so much.

For all of the Franz Ferdinand fans out there: there has been much better. Alex Kapranos’ (lead vocals) voice is different although I can’t put my finger on it. For all of those who can’t deal with change, stick with the first album “Franz Ferdinand.”
