Students enjoy the entertainment and games at last year’s after-prom party. The party featured contests, including American Idol and Fear Factor, and many prizes including a DVD player, laptop and even scholarships. This year’s after-prom party will be held at the YMCA and will have more prizes and entertainment. Prizes will be awarded throughout the night with grand prizes given out at the very end. -

Where to eat, what to wear and who to go with are all choices students going to the prom must decided on. Another option being thrown into the decision-making process is the Patrons for a Safe Prom Night after-prom party held at the YMCA.

“We hope that every year those (students) that go will realize that (our after-prom party) is a lot of fun and will want to come again the next year,” said Katherine Hopkins, a member of the Patrons for a Safe Prom Night.

Hopkins says Patrons for a Safe Prom Night were happy with the number of attendees at last year’s event and are hoping that number will rise this year, especially since all three Dare County high schools are invited. It will be a party that everyon, who is eligible to attend the prom is welcome to attend.

“I think that this year will be the test for whether or not future after-prom parties can be open to prom-goers from all three schools,” said Robin Sawyer, a member of the Patrons for a Safe Prom Night.

This year’s party will feature an inflatible obstacle course, Dance Dance Revolution, and Fear Factor and a variety of prizes as in the past. Last year the Patrons collected about $17,000 in cash and prizes. Organizers say this year’s party will be bigger and better than past years.

The school-sponsored party is meant to offer a safe environment for prom-goers to spend their night.

“I think it shows kids that the school cares about their well-being,” Principal Allison Sholar said.

The party will be May 21 from midnight to 5:45 a.m., and will follow the same guidelines as last year. Prizes will be awarded throughout the night including several prize packages, scholarships, and a grand prize at the end.

Those who stay all night will be treated to a free breakfast at the Dunes’ restaurant in the morning.

“Talk to your friends who went last year,” Sawyer said. “The after-prom party is so much fun. Not only will you get to spend the night with your friends and classmates, but you could go home with cash or prizes. What do you have to lose?”
