Guys you already have a “hardcore sport.” Wouldn’t you want the girls to have the same opportunities?
There has been a lot of debate in school about opening up a girl’s rugby team. Out of 20 students, 18 said that they would actually like a girl’s rugby team. Boys included.
“I actually think that a girl’s rugby team would gain a lot of attention especially from the guys,” senior Alex Gomez mentioned.
Some say yes mainly for the equality.
“There should be a girl’s rugby team because girls should be able to play the same sports that guys play,” senior Roberto Ortiz said.
And, girls think they deserve a chance too.
Senior Andrea Salgado said “It's also a great way to let out your anger and release the stress you have inside you”
Junior Maritza Huerta is one of the main supporters trying to get girls rugby of the ground.
“It would be really cool to be able to play rugby with the girls, prove that girls could do it to!” Junior Maritza Huerta said. “We already have a group of girls that are willing to start it up,” she continued.
Formal football players and current ones also have their opinion on this.
“Starting another sport would mean a lot of money to start it up plus it would be hard for the coach since he already has to train the guy’s rugby team” senior Eduardo Tenorio rugby player said.
The first steps have already been taken.
“I've mentioned it to coaches, and they have said it's a great idea, but it's harder to actually start up. There are only 4 coaches for rugby and I think those are the only teachers that actually know how to coach the sport in the whole school. So getting coaches for a girls’ team would be a lot harder since they are already in charge of the guy’s team. But i have recently talked to football player that graduated a few years ago and also played rugby and said he would be willing to coach if a girls’ team was made.” Senior Esperanza Ibarra said.
She has been trying to start up a girl’s rugby team since last year but this year it seems like more girls are willing to join if it is available!
“I’m sure if there's a rugby team, the girls in wrestling would be interested in playing too “Senior Esperanza included.
More and more girls really like the idea of a girl’s rugby team.
“It shows movement and strength in girls; they have the dedication and determination to do it too. It’s a fear being released and a challenge for a girl to break away from; girls can be just as tough,” junior Yaritza Borjon said.
Volunteers to start it up are already here in Morton!
“It should be done! I’d join!,” senior Rebecca Fuentes said.
