The Girls Varsity Basketball team

lost their second playoff game

by a close score of 60-51 against

Laredo Nixon Feb. 17. The girls

flew through their first playoff

game against the PSJA Bears with

a score of 58-29 Feb. 14.

Overall this varsity team has

gone through a championship

year with a season record of 25-7

and a district record of 12-2. The

girls were second in district and

were the Area Finalists in the state

playoffs.

“I think we did very well in

district,” senior guard Adriana

Covarrubias said. “If we would

have beaten the Hawks three times

in a row we would have made

first.”

According to Jessica Gonzalez,

11, the girls were driven by their

best efforts throughout the season.

“Overall we pulled together

as a team and as champions,”

Jessica said. “We gave hard

work, dedication, and our time to

succeed.”

To the girls, tradition is

everything.

“We made it to the playoffs this

year,” Kendra said. “I hope that the

tradition stays alive, and the team

goes even further next year.”

According to Coach Zamarripa,

the team wouldn’t have the level

of success they’ve obtained if it

weren’t for the hours of practice

and specialized drills.

“Our drills elevate our play and

prepare us for our next opponent,”

Coach Zamarripa said.

According to Kendra, the

practices were difficult because

of the timed drills the team

participates in.

“The hardest drill for the team

was ‘12 in a row’ which consists

of left and right hand lay-ups and

jump shots,” Kendra said. “We had

to count on each other to make the

ideal time goal.”

The girls feel that the drills

prepared them for their potential

journey to the playoffs, and the

attributing factors to their success

are communication and attitude.

“The game atmosphere can

make or break the team,” Coach

Zamarripa said. “The girls had

to remain calm, play to their

potential, and make the right

adjustments at the right time.”

According to junior team member

Tiffany Hernandez, the girls

are more than just a group of

basketball players.

“We are a family that has a lot of

fun together and is tied together

through our dedication,” Tiffany

said.

The team’s dedication took

them soaring through the season

and into the second round of the

playoffs.
