I have recently become a strong believer that critics have been falsely advertising family movies. Take The Benchwarmers for example, a movie rated PG-13. According to http://www.kids-in-mind.com, the movie has a rating of 4 out of 10 for both profanity and violence/gore. This rating would make it appear that it is not a bad movie for a child under the age of 13. To me, this assumption is one hundred percent incorrect! The movie had such potential, but unfortunately, it didn’t deliver. For example, some of the thematic elements were inappropriate for preteens. I was uncomfortable watching with my 12-year old brother when issues of conceiving a child and homosexual relations were presented. What kind of message does this portray to young children? Who by the way, took up the majority of seats in the theatre. Why can’t people develop stories for younger audiences with good, G-rated themes, without all of the unnecessary crude elements? That being said, while my mother and I sat shaking our heads in disgust, my younger brother thought the movie was hilarious! Save your money, if you feel the need to see this movie, wait for the DVD!
