"Are you new?" This is what many children hear when moving to a new school. Do students take moving easily, or is it a difficult transition? Many Cane Bay High School students know how it feels to be "the new kid".

According to a few high school students at CBHS, when they moved they were "nervous" or "scared", and afraid they wouldn't "fit in". "Trauma and Loss: Research and Interventions" by William Steele and Caroline H Shepard, states that children will likely be able to cope and even benefit from the experience when having support. If a child needs to move because of a traumatic experience, it could have some negative consequences. CBHS students say they treat others who are new "friendlier" and "the same as everyone else". Although students say they are friendlier towards new students, most students who were new explained how they "still miss their old friends."

The research from Steele and Shepard also explains that children who move will most likely be able to deal with moving around as adults. Many of the students at Cane Bay have agreed and according to one student "moving helps you deal with other things that may be out of your control."

Mr. Hirak, School Guidance Counselor has been working with new students for seven years. Mr. Hirak estimates that about seventy-five to one hundred students, come and go from Cane Bay High School each year. He also said that most of the students he has been in contact with seem to have adapted well with support within four to five weeks.

Many students at Cane Bay High School can relate to moving to a new school. A majority of the students here have in fact moved. After awhile, students will find that being "the new kid" isn't so bad after all.
