The cool fall air blows by on a Friday night. The smell of hamburgers, and hotdogs. Many people say there is nothing like a Friday night high school football game. Many American families are bonded through high school football games, because it is such a huge American pastime. Football has been said to be more than just a sport. Football, teaches you many lessons, and goes hand-in-hand with many life situations.

            Cane Bay High school is a young school. During their first season, Cane Bay only had freshmen and sophomores, on the team, but still played sports on the varsity level. It was a challenge, 14 and 15 year old boys playing one of the most severe contact sports against grown men. Even though it was tough, it made the team better. The first year with a 2-8 record, then improving the next year to a 5-7 record, and improving to a 7-5 record the following year, the team was progressing.

            This year however, this year was going to be different. The team that had played together for the past three years was split. Most of the defense graduated, and a few offensive starters. The graduation of the first senior class was not the only problem; the team also lost their head coach and athletic director Jeff Cruce. Many people predicted Cane Bay football to not be as successful as the previous years. The Cane Bay football received their new head coach Russell Zehr. Although he was the new head coach he was not new to the team, being the defensive coordinator under coach Cruce.

            The team under their new coach started off not as they wanted to. Losing all three of their pre-season scrimmages, they had a lack of confidence. The first game of the year was a big game, against their rivals Ashley Ridge. The outcome of the game in Ashley Ridges favor 49-7 over Cane Bay. The team at this point had almost lost all hope. Even though Cane Bay lost the next game, it was a confidence booster. The team Hillside high school is the defending state champions of North Carolina.

            Going into week three 0-2 Cane Bay was hoping to pull out their first win, which they did against Edisto High School. Cane Bay went on to defeating the next two opponents Hannahan, and Woodland high school. Improving their record to 3-2, this was never done before at Cane Bay to start the season. The team not only had confidence now they became close, and started treating each other with respect. The Cane Bay football team was more than just a team they were becoming a brotherhood.

            Many people have different opinions on what their favorite part of a football game is. Some fans say when the game is close, and a “nail biter” in the fourth quarter. Players give a different response winning the game says Keenan Reid senior football player is his favorite part. Many people just have such a great love for the game, they love everything about football. Most fans say their favorite part of the game is when their team is winning. Others say they prefer high school or college football, over the NFL, because the players play for pride and their school, instead of money.

            Whatever level of football being watched the game is still the same, and is one of the most exciting games to be invented, according to most.
