After winning the Northeast Consortium for the first time in Bengal history, the JV boys’ soccer team has proven that they have what it takes to make a winning soccer team.

“The team really came together strong, especially defensively towards the end of the season,” says coach Patrick Howley. “[We] definitely learned how to win.” Although they struggled at points through the season, the boys have definitely shown improvement finishing with a 4-7 record.

During a heart breaking final match against the Northwest Jaguars, the guys were unable to capitalize in key situations, losing, 1-0, in overtime. “Losing games like [these] only builds character,” says sophomore Matthew Sherwood. Sherwood feels the ability to learn from an experience like this one will only allow this young team to improve.

The team was unable to hold off the Kennedy Cavaliers, October 16, falling 3-0. A strong Cavalier attack doomed the Bengals throughout the match. Adds Sherwood, “We just couldn’t seem to hold them off when we needed to.” Despite the lopsided score, the game was close until the final minutes when the Cavaliers put two goals in the back of the net.

October 12, the Bengals’ 1-0 win against the Blair Blazers was a testament to the team’s growth over the season. After a well placed corner kick, sophomore Grant Bradshaw drilled the ball into the lower right corner, scoring the only goal of the game. With increased chemistry and skill, the Bengals were able to hold off the Blazers and add one to the win column.

The younger players on the team have high hopes for next season. Says freshman Clay Rorie, “We’re going to be really good next year.” The team’s future sophomores hope that the experience gained this year will contribute to more wins in the future.

Looking back on the season, the team is satisfied. “A lot of players on this team improved a lot over the course of the season,” adds coach Howley. “If [they] continue to work hard in the off season... [we] will be even more successful next year.” So fans put those seat pads in a safe place and watch out for the Bengals in 2008.
