After a quick start to the season, the JV boys’ basketball team squandered a one point lead in the final 2.8 seconds against the Whitman Vikings, and ultimately lost 43-41.

Playing without their two leading scorers, sophomores William Credle and John Mgaza, the team was led by freshman co-captain Max Hedgepeth. “We came together as a team but couldn’t pull it off...We played very well without two of our better players,” says Hedgepeth.

The team suffered a disappointing 72-60 loss to the Sherwood Warriors on January 29, spoiling their recent success. “We came out weak in the first half,” says sophomore Tommy Steele, “and almost battled back, but the hole was too deep to overcome.”

A three game winning streak against Paint Branch Panthers (56-51), Walter Johnson Wildcats (62-47), and Blair Blazers (42-31) had the Bengals’ hopes high for their remaining games. Credle and Mgaza showcased their skills against all three schools. Credle scored 23 points against the rival Panthers and Mgaza scored 17 points against the Blazers and 16 against the Wildcats.

“This team has a positive attitude and plays well together. Everyone is fitting into their spot and the overall feeling has come back up in a big way,” says head coach Daniel Feher. The team’s progress hinges on good coaching and even better work ethic.

Much of the team’s success has come from strong leadership. As the lone freshman captain, Hedgepeth has taken the responsibility to heart. “It’s just a title,” adds Hedgepeth. “You just have to accept it and not let your head get too big.”

The Bengals finish the season against rival Springbrook Blue Devils tonight at 5:15pm. “We take everything one game at a time,” adds coach Feher. “We’re always trying to do better next time.”
