At-a-glance

Bowling will soon be a new addition to Redhound Athletics, scheduled to start sometime this winter. -

The Corbin Redhounds are known for their sports success.
They dominate the football field, control the basketball courts, and excel in the many other sports CHS has to offer.
Soon their skills will be put to the test in a new setting: the bowling alley.

The idea came about several years ago when the “Bowling Friday” part of P.E. classes started gaining popularity. At first it was just a fun way to end the week, but it was soon given more attention than original expectations planned for.
“We’re always looking for a new sport that’s for both boys and girls,” said Athletic Director Thom Smith.
With this in mind, former Athletic Director and coach Gerald Foley devised a survey last year to determine how a bowling team might sit with Corbin High School athletes. The interest level was surprisingly high, and plans are being executed accordingly.
“We will have a sign-up sheet soon,” said Mr. Smith. “Hopefully we’ll have enough for a boys and girls team, but if not, we can compete as a co-ed team.”
More importantly, however, is the “sign-up sheet” for the coach.
“We posted for the position and we’re going through applicants,” Mr. Smith said.
Practices and games will not start until the spot is filled, but contact has already been made with the owner of Forrest Lanes Bowling Alley, and he has agreed to facilitate the program when the time comes to launch.
“We’re weeks, if not months, away from starting. The first practice won’t be before Oct. 15 and the first game won’t be before Nov. 28. It’s going to be a winter sport, and it’ll last into February,” said Mr. Smith.
As bowling is not the most common sport in the area, finding competition is a little more difficult than usual.
“We’re looking at teams that probably aren’t as recognizable,” said Mr. Smith. “East and West Jessamine, Bryan Station, Lafayette, Madison Southern, Lexington Catholic...those are a few we’re looking at.”
In addition to the fun of it, bowling has other benefits as well. Several Kentucky colleges consider bowling a major sport and provide scholarships based on performance.
“There’s a state bowling tournament March 18-24, and proprietors are looking to initiate scholarship venues,” said Mr. Smith. “Maybe not this season, but I know they’re looking forward to that.”
Though the start of this new sport is not set it stone, when the season finally begins, it should be a strike with CHS athletes.
