After a pretty rough season in the 2011 playoffs, there is a lot of speculation that Dwight will be leaving, but it is still speculation. Some say that he’ll be going to L.A. Lakers, New York Knicks, or possibly L.A. Clippers; but Dwight hasn’t said for sure what he wants to do.
There is no law that says he has to tell Orlando his plans before his contract runs out; he can leave the anticipation until the 11th hour, if he chooses.
However, Dwight says he “loves the fans and people of Orlando.” Therefore most people don’t believe he will “pull a LeBron.”
The best option would be to tell Orlando upfront that he wants to leave, so they can explore every plausible option for trades. Orlando wants a ring, just like every other NBA team out there, so it only makes sense to look for the best players to replace Dwight Howard so Magic doesn’t completely fall apart. Possible opportunities would be Gasol or Bynum (Lakers) or Stoudemire (Knicks) or even Griffin (Clippers) but no one knows for sure who the best choice would be.
Dwight Howard’s obvious best option for rings would be to go West. With so many teams and players dominating the courts in the East, it would be difficult for him to overcome dynasties like Miami, Atlanta, Chicago, and Boston.
Regardless of what Dwight decides to do, Orlando fans know that it’s getting a little too close for comfort until the end of his contract, hopefully he gives plenty of notice so Orlando can stay the great team that they are.
