Created in 1981, MTV or Music Television, was once the top place for music fans to get their music. In recent years, the music has started to get lost.
Originally a channel where the only thing played was music videos, MTV was on top of the world. Overtime, the channel adopted new ideas such as "The Real World," "Beavis and Butthead," and "Celebrity Deathmatch." These shows were still popular, but didn’t really involve music as much as the channel’s name intended. One of the biggest shows on MTV was "TRL," or Total Request Live. The show showcased all of the top music videos for several years. In 2008, MTV canceled the show, not only ending the show but also an era.
Sophomore Tiffany Bauer has thoughts that MTV will return back to its music focus. “Possibly, but most likely not,” said Bauer.
Since the close of TRL, the channel has almost taken a complete turn and changed it’s programs. Now the most popular shows include "Hard Times of RJ Berger," "My Life as Liz," "Teen Mom," and "Jersey Shore."
Junior Ricardo Almeida used to enjoy MTV, but has since stopped tuning in. “I think it should go back to the way it used to be,” said Almeida.
Not all people disagree with MTV’s new direction it has taken. Junior Angie Lowry is an avid fan of "Jersey Shore," MTV’s hottest show. “Reality TV is more of what MTV is today,” said Lowry.
Although some may or may not agree with the new style of MTV, the channel is still huge and one of the most watched channels on television today.
