PSSAs. We all dread them and tend to see them as a joke, but should we?
If you do not score proficient or advanced on the eleventh grade PSSA exams, you will be placed in a standards class your senior year for whichever subject was up to par. In the standards classes provided you will learn new test taking strategies and commonly asked questions on the PSSA’s.
“[Students] learn to use resources correctly and appropriately,” said standards math teacher Jessica Armstrong. Stundents learn how using a graphing calculator can actually be a huge advantage.
All students in a standards class then retakes the PSSA’s in November of their senior year in hopes to pass the test. Within several months your scores come back and if you have passed the PSSA’s, you are then released from the class and given study halls. If you do not pass the retake you remain in the standards class for the remainder of the school year. Passing the standards class makes up for not scoring high enough on the PSSA’s.
Recently seniors at Carlisle that are in standards classes got there PSSA retake scores back.
“The administration is pleased with the number that passed the retest,” said standards English teacher Michelle Disbrow.
The math scores were pleasing as well.
“Last year 25% [of the math students] passed out [of the class], and this year the number was raised to 36%,” said Armstrong.
