Millions of people around the world are using music share web sites to illegally download music. Limewire, one of those sites, has recently been shut down.
Limewire allows its users to share music files with other people. In 2010, the US Federal Court issued the site to stop the downloading and distributing of music files. The effects of allowing the illegal downloading has taken its toll on the Recording Industry Association of America. In October 2010, the four year struggle to shut it down has officially ended.
Some students at Carlisle have admitted to using Limewire to obtain some of their music.
"I was confused when I found out it was shut down," said junior Autumn Shank. "I wasn’t expecting that to happen."
Although some students aren’t happy with the site shut down, others don’t seem to be bothered.
"I don’t care that it shut down," said senior Lorielle Arthur. "The site gave me viruses anyway."
Some students didn’t even notice that the site was shut down at all.
"I don’t use the site so I didn’t realize what happened," said freshman Abby Finfrock.
Music share web sites such as Limewire have a lot to do with how the recording industry does. Many take away the profits of the industry and artists.
