Atop the high school lingers a dormant satellite which was used about ten years ago to expand the courses that could be offered at Upper Perk.

The hunk of crescent-shaped metal was at one time a technological wonder providing long distant satellite learning to students who were eager to broaden their horizon. It brought three different courses into the Upper Perkiomen Program of Studies; two of those three were Geography and Japanese. The dish would pick up feeds from the University of Texas and Nebraska and then transmit the information onto a television set for those who desired to take advantage of the program.

The satellite was an example of the school district’s technological use to augment the education possibilities at the High School. The tool became obsolete due to the convenient accessibility of the internet. The internet now allows students to take college courses offered at Montgomery County Community College within the confines of the High School.

The satellite now stands as a relic looking over the valley atop the roof of the Upper Perkiomen High School. The retired hardware that was once an intricate part of cutting edge Upper Perkiomen education is now a symbol of the rapidly changing technological environment we are a part of.
