The Upper Perkiomen High School’s Leo Club is an organization for high school students interested in community service.
The main and ongoing project is the Eyeglass project where used eyeglasses are collected in bins around the Upper Perk Valley, and then cleaned, sorted, and sent to impoverished countries.
Throughout the school year, members have had over a dozen opportunities to participate in events coordinated by Mrs. Tasha Robson, the staff advisor, and the club cabinet: Leon Edelman, Ben Chandler, Amanda Ulmer, and Courtney Jennett.
Previous activities include serving food at the Lioness Spaghetti Dinner, Crabfest, and the Visually Impaired Dinner, an Induction ceremony for new members, baby-sitting done by the Special Education Task Force, assisting at UPHS’s Open House, and raising money for the visually impaired with the White Cane Fundraiser.
Members of the Leo’s Club were active in helping at the Christmas Carnival, Hometown Harvest, and Hometown Christmas. They also lent their service to two local auctions (the Penny Auction and the Mini-Hands Artfest), and were in the Halloween Parade.
Among the most rewarding activities that the Leo’s Club has participated in was giving eye exams at the Special Olympics and raising money for cancer research in the Relay For Life.
Future projects include “twinning” (communicating with another Leo’s Club in a foreign country about activities), a field trip to the Mennonite Research Center with the Quakertown High School’s Community Service Club, donating from club funds to relieve the tsunami devastation in Asia, and participating in the Casualty Drill with the Montgomery Office of Emergency Preparedness.
The Leo's Club also plans to participate in a district rally, an annual pet food drive, and the Youth and Family Services Plant Sale.
