Last month, all students from the high school filed into the auditorium for the Texting and Driving Assembly.
The Brown family, who would be doing the presentation, stood to the right of the stage, preparing to give the students a lesson they hoped would never be forgetten.
The parents, Johnny Mac and Jeanne, had suffered the tragic loss of their daughter, Alexandria “Alex” Brown, who lost her life because of texting behind the wheel.
Alex’s parents, along with her little sister, Katrina Brown, now travel to schools and events to try and sway teens and adults alike from risking their lives for a text message.
The father recalled how his daughter had told him,“ Dad, that’s not going to happen to me.” His daughter was confident that she would never be affected by texting in her truck.
But she was wrong; the statistics show that people that text behind the wheel are six times more likely to get in to an accident than if they were drunk.
In November 2009, Alex’s choices made those statistics all the more true because she was texting while driving.
“Texting and driving is the number one death for teens,” Jeanne said looking out into her attentive audience, trying to stress the reality of the poor decision making in our everyday lives.
The screen above the stage showed facts from Distraction.gov, including the three ways that texting while driving distracts the driver: visual, manual, and cognitive, all distractions included in texting while on the road.
“I hope you never have to face that,” Katrina Brown said as she reflected on how she lost her big sister at such a young age.
Alex was only one of the many teens that die each day because of texting and driving at the same time.
The Brown family will still strive to move people away from doing what Alex did, a gift that might just save your life.
