When the Upper Perk Football team beat Owen J. Roberts 14-13 on Friday October 7 it was not just a regular game. This was the 1st annual Breast Cancer Awareness game for Upper Perk, which raised $4,037 with T-shirt sales and donations.
According to coach Keith Leamer, “One hundred percent of the money raised will be donated to American Cancer Society for Breast Cancer Research.”
Leamer added, “The idea was started by the Phoenixville HS head football coach Bill Furlong, who wanted the Pac-10 schools to help raise money for Breast Cancer Awareness.
The Phoenixville Football Booster Club purchased an entire set of pink jerseys #’s 1-99 and passed the jerseys around the league from week to week.
UP’s Ronnie Gillespie said, “It was a really cool atmosphere, we all had a really good time wearing pink, and it was great to get a win.”
The Upper Perk National Honor Society also helped out with the project as did the Upper Perk Football TD Club, especially Mrs. Danielle Sykes.
The team also partnered with St. Luke's Hospital to help make this an outstanding fund raising experience.
Upper Perk had touchdowns from captains Ronnie Gillespie and John Olsen to beat the Wildcats.
