On May 13th of this year, the senior class of Upper Perkiomen High School (UP) will be taking their senior class trip. The trip will consist of visiting Ground Zero, watching the Broadway musical, Wicked, and spending the rest of the day in Manhattan. The man in charge of it all, physical education teacher Mr. Frank Mercon, said, “It’s a great one day trip. The only great one we’ve found this time of year. You can’t get tickets to Phillies games, and it’s not good beach weather. This is the best combination so far.” When the senior class was first told about their trip, many were excited and set on going. However, because a Broadway production is a part of the agenda, the cost of the trip was somewhat steep, discouraging many students from going on the trip. Out of a class of roughly 200 students, only 100 of them are attending the trip. Mercon intends to solve this problem by providing fundraising opportunities for the trip in the future. Though many students are very excited about the trip this year, the current agenda is not at all what the arrangers of it had in mind when they first started planning. Mercon says that the original plan was, “Four days in Florida.” Mercon went on to say that in recent years, overnight trips have not been made possible, disappointing students. However, this year is going to be different. The trip was meant to be a reward for the seniors, as well as an opportunity to learn a bit about culture. Overall, all of the students attending the trip are looking forward to it, as is Mercon, even though he can’t go because of his prior commitment to the baseball team. Mercon’s final statement, “I’m actually excited about this one” tells us all we need to know about the trip.
