Madison Scripture and Kayla Myers like to run and they are on the track team. Recently, while they were jogging together, they were talking about all the shoes that they had and didn’t wear anymore.
“One day while Kayla and I were running together, we were talking about all the shoes we have and realized that so many people in the world don’t have any shoes,” recounted Madison.
So Madison and Kayla decided that they were going to donate their shoes. The two scavenged the internet for an organization to donate to.
They found Share Your Soles in Allentown and decided to start a school-wide campaign to collect shoes.
The shoe drive was held at the high school for one month, ending tomorrow.
Madison and Kayla set goal of over 100 pairs of shoes and they had 60 as of early March.
After they are done washing the shoes, Madison and Kayla drive to Allentown and drop the shoes off.
The originator of Share Your Soles, Mona Purdy, started this organization because she was traveling through Central America, and running races, and saw that the people were painting tar on the soles of their feet so they could run in the race because they did not have shoes.
She started the donation in her garage and then went to schools and it took off from there.
“The thing that we like about Mona Purdy being the originator is that she is a runner just like we are,” said Madison.
