The Jonathan Law girls basketball team hosted a Pink Zone game to raise money for breast cancer research on Saturday, January 22.

The basketball team started doing the event last year and has the games against Hillhouse High School from New Haven.

"We raised well over $1,000 between the two of us," said junior Captain Jackie Kochiss.

Last year the team only hosted one game, but is doing two games this year to raise more to help in the fight against breast cancer.

"It was our coach [Heather Saucier] and the coach from Hillhouse’s idea to start doing it last year," senior Marissa Bacon said.

To prepare for the event, the team stayed after practice a few nights before the game to decorate the gym with posters. They also had the freshman team go around and ask people for donations. Both teams [Hillhouse and Law] both made baked goods to sell during the game to increase the amount of money raised.

"Unfortunately, we had a smaller turn out than we expected because the game was postponed due to snow," Bacon said. "We also had to have it in the old gym instead of the new gym."

The team feels they lost a lot of money due to the snow.

"If the game was on a school night, like it was supposed to be, I feel like there would have been a lot more students that would have come and we would have sold a lot more food than we did," said Senior Tri-captain Amanda Keator.

The team also had a lot of help from the parents of the players.

"Jackie’s mom was a lot of help and so was [Junior] Kim Legen’s mom," said Bacon.

The team could have raised more money if the entry fee for the game was donated to the breast cancer foundation, but the money belongs to the Sports Association.

"If I could have done something different to have a better turn out, I’d want the game to be moved to a different day so that we could have had the game in the new gym," said Bacon.

The team had a smaller turn out due to the game being on a Saturday afternoon and the wrestling team had a big meet in the new gym. Many people that might have gone to the game went to the wrestling meet instead.

The second game was held in the Hillhouse High School gymnasium on Tuesday, February 8 at 7 p.m.
