They are everywhere--getting lost, slamming their lockers, and asking for directions.

Every school year, Jonathan Law welcomes a new class of freshmen. This year 314 students enrolled in the school to become the class of 2010.

“The freshmen’s behavior this year was excellent,” Mrs. Reshenk, freshmen English teacher, said. “They were not rude, crude, or socially unacceptable.”

One of the biggest and hardest adjustments for freshmen was the size of the building.

“The thing I had a problem with was just finding my way around,” freshman James Q. said. “The school is a little bigger and there are more people.”

As hard as it is to adjust to a new school and new school environment, freshmen need to get serious with school quickly because their freshman year is as important as junior and senior year.

“I try to inform freshmen of the importance of freshman year,” Mr. Ragaini, freshmen algebra teacher, said. “All colleges look at freshman, sophomore, and junior grades to make their decision.”

The transformation from middle school to high school is not only about the size of the building and the number of people. Responsibility is also part of high school.

“There is more pressure now to be responsible with school and just life,” freshman Mike D. said.

Of course high school is not only work and responsibility. It also gives you freedom. There are no trips to the bathroom with the class, no homeroom at the end of the day, and no one forcing you around.

“High school is better than I thought it would be,” freshman Kerri A. said. “You have more freedom here.”

It is important that freshmen understand that high school is an important part of their life and they should take advantage of everything that is offered here.

The guidance office is helping with the adjustment of freshmen in high school. The department will be working with freshmen in the upcoming month.

“Freshmen will be coming in small groups and individually meeting with their guidance counselors,” Ms. Raymo, director of the guidance office, said.

Some advice from teachers for freshmen:

“Be yourself; if you want drama, then join the drama club,” Reshenk said.

Ragaini agreed.

“[The freshmen] need to be themselves and not try to impress the upper classmates,” Ragaini said. “They should respect the faculty and upper classmates. They should also care about their grades.”

Some advice from an upper classman:

“Walk on the right side of the hallway,” junior Julie K. said.

Everyone was a freshman once in his or her life and everyone remembers how he or she felt the first day of school, but being in high school is very important and also fun. So enjoy your high school years here, Class of 2010.
