It started as tin foil records
with spiral grooves that when
played would create vibrations
caused from the needle.
This was the beginning of
the musical revolution known
as the record player , which was
invented in 1877 by Thomas
Edison.
All this changed with the
new invention of the disc record
and matrix record created by
Emile Berliner in 1887.
Another big accomplishment
was when electricity became
widespread.
This took the old crank
record player and made music
listening as easy as one flip of a
switch.
As time went on, the record
player started losing its popularity,
due to new technology being
produced.
Many companies that sold
record players couldn’t keep up
with the newer eight tracks,
cassette tapes, CD players, and
eventually mp3 players.
“My iPod is like everything
to me,” Nick Hodgson ‘13
said.
With many of the “newer”
technologies now obsolete,
record players are making a
comeback.
DJs have started using them
at dance clubs so they can get
the best of several records, while
being able to mix the music.
Record companies also
started redoing older hit albums
on vinyl.
Vinyl to some also creates
a richer, more in depth, sound
than the new digital music, with
the exception of a little dust or a
minor scratch.
“I feel the scratches give it
more music character compared
to what a scratch on a CD produces,”
Brandon Rice ‘13 said.
Local record shops, such as
Green Light Music and Video,
have opened and sell used record
players starting at $30.
Green Light also sells an array
of records.
Record players are starting to
make a comeback; but, they may
never be as popular as they were.
Although, iPods may never
die, record players are certainly
regaining some of their popularity.
