Disco Swing; the Hustle.
Both dances are well known
for being two of the first disco
moves.
“It has to be when Rick
James came about. It’s the true
funky disco music.” said Luke
Kortokrax ‘13
Although, the 60s and
70s gave disco its boom, with
the National Disco Day in
New York, the Global Disco
Competition in London,
and the 1977 disco hit film
“Saturday Night Fever.”
“I couldn’t wait for a
‘Saturday Night Fever’ sequel to
come out,” social studies teacher
Jeff Steele said, but the 80s
brought change.
In the 80s, disco moves were
replaced with the Texas Two
Step. This new dance featured
easy to learn moves.
Salsa dancing soon
followed; almost eliminating
the remaining amount of disco
dancers.
“Salsa dancing is the
complete opposite kind of music
than disco,” said Brandon Rice
‘13. “How did that come out of
the disco revolution?”
Disco has had its boom and
its low point; however, it has not
been lost.
Within the last few years,
disco music has been further
transformed through new
technology.
This new breed of music is
known as Techno or Electronic
music; which is featured at raves
and olden day disco bars.
This new breed of disco is
generally featured in the night
scene of bigger cities and is
popular with the age group
between 18-30.
Disco dancing continues to
remain a fun dancing activity;
but, now with a more digital
twist.
“It’s something to stretch
the disco legs; you know?” said
Micah Edwards ‘13.
New artists of this genre
tend to focus on light shows
and outfits. Lady Gaga, a new
Dance/Electronic musician, is
well known for such things.
“She thinks shes making art;
but, she just looks delirious,”
said Blayne Gibson ‘13.
Daft Punk, another well
known Dance/Electronic band
consisting of a French duo, is
well known for their intricate
robot outfits, as well as their
light concerts.
A musical revolution since
the 70s, disco has been bringing
dance to a new level in bars and
clubs. It has had its highs and
lows between disco competitions
and being replaced.
