Artists like Pablo Picasso and
Vincent VanGogh are legendary
and world renown.
Their masterpieces, like the
Mona Lisa, have been photocopied
to produce duplicates.
However, these famous pieces
have a competition when it
comes to quantity over quality.
At an eye doctor, veterinary
clinic, doctors office, and many
other medical facilities , art is
mass produced and seen in more
places than a Starry Night copy.
Such art includes the detailed
picture of your dogs digestive
track in the brochure you just
got from your vet. It could
be the diagram of blood flow
through the human heart you
see at the gym. These depictions
of miscellaneous areas of science,
biology, and medicine are works
of a medical illustrator.
“Scientific illustrations
shouldnt be excluded from art;
because ,they are still visual.
Leonardo De Vinci experimented
with human operations and
drew his observations,” said Art
teacher Regina Beltowski.
Medical Illustrators are
trained with a Biomedical Art
degree; which gives them skill
to combine the biological (life,
structure, growth, cells, tissue,
organs) parts of medicine
(viruses, acids, treatments) with
visual art.
Medical Illustrators achieve
accuracy with anatomical knowledge
and expressing it graphically.
The blend of left and right
brain skills create opportunities
in many fields.
A medical illustrator is not
limited to traditional projects
like drawings and illustrations.
For example, their expertise
could be in sculpting materials
to create 3-D models and
diagrams.
A popular medium is computer
software. Graphic Artists
create visual education materials
for an institute, or a web
page.
llustrations and graphics that
provide explanation in textbooks
are works of a Medical Illustrator.
They also create films, pamphlets,
disgrams, exhibits, and
brochures for instruction and/or
education.
Forensic Artists produce
criminal evidence through face
reconstruction and predictions
of a persons aged appearance.
Those sketches and photographs
of medical studies
that appear in magazines and
as trending topics are art of a
medical illustrator.
Medical illustrators are
skilled in anatomy, science, art,
technology, and visual communication.
Prior to that, biomedical art
majors take courses in animation,
science, medical sculpture,
business and professional
practices, computer imaging,
multimedia, and a few others.
Prospective illustrators can
obtain a degree from a number
of art and design schools, such
as Cleveland Institute of Art, or
University of Pennsylvania.
If it’s time to choose a career
and you’re torn between being
the graphic design guru or a
dedicated naturalist at Yosemite,
consider the versatility of a
degree of Biomedical Art.
You could score employment
for pharmaceutical firms,
medical device manufacturers,
forensic art and criminal procedures,
education and higher
learning, veterinary practices
and products, government requests,
publishing companies,
hospitals, advertising agencies,
or magazine.
