At-a-glance

David Fincher's "The Social Network," one of 2010's best films.

Near-perfect acting, gripping dialogue and acclaimed director David Fincher make “The Social Network” one of 2010’s best films.

Jesse Eisenberg’s performance as the founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, is superb. Eisenberg’s blunt, quick-witted mannerisms portray Zuckerberg as the anti-social genius who doesn’t care about money or friends, just inventing something cool. The film also includes excellent performances from Andrew Garfield and Justin Timberlake. Garfield, who plays former Facebook CFO, Eduardo Saverin, delivers a gripping performance, forcing the viewer to sympathize with Saverin throughout the entire film.  Timberlake, as Napster founder Sean Parker, perfectly plays the devil’s advocate throughout the whole movie, constantly pushing Zuckerberg to further Facebook at all costs with no regard for friends or money. The dialogue throughout the movie is fantastic. Screenwriter, Aaron Sorkin, wrote all lines with a very witty, biting tone, especially for Zuckerberg, which is exemplified below:

Gage: Mr. Zuckerberg, do I have your full attention?

Mark Zuckerberg: [stares out the window] No.

Gage: Do you think I deserve it?

Mark Zuckerberg: [looks at lawyer] What?

Gage: Do you think I deserve your full attention?

Mark Zuckerberg: I had to swear an oath before we began this deposition, and I don’t want to perjure myself, so I have a legal obligation to say no.

Gage: Okay – no. You don’t think I deserve your attention.

Mark Zuckerberg: I think if your clients want to sit on my shoulders and call themselves tall, they have the right to give it a try – but there’s no requirement that I enjoy sitting here listening to people lie. You have part of my attention – you have the minimum amount. The rest of my attention is back at the offices of Facebook, where my colleagues and I are doing things that no one in this room, including and especially your clients, are intellectually or creatively capable of doing. [pauses] Did I adequately answer your condescending question?

The cinematography, which can be accredited to the direction of David Fincher, is what I found most impressive. The editing and camera work is flawless, engaging the viewer. The entire look of the film is great, reminding me of Fincher’s 2007 release, “Zodiac.”

Overall, “The Social Network” is a great film, and will definitely be up for 2010 Oscar Nominations. Even if you are uninterested in the founding of Facebook, the film has much to offer and is an entertaining watch for any moviegoer.
