Every girl at TYWLS of Astoria has asked herself at least one, or more, questions about why the school is how it is. Well, here is my attempt to answer those questions. These are some of the questions I have heard girls wondering about.
1. My friends all say that wearing a uniform doesn't let you express who you really are. Why do we have to wear uniform, what’s so good about it?
When everyone signed up to come to TYWLS of Astoria it was stated in the contract, that you signed, that it is a uniform school. By signing that you agreed to the rules and one of the rules was you had to be in complete and perfect uniform everyday. Wearing a uniform, however, doesn't stop you from being creative and showing your personality. If you like wearing big or fancy earrings, for example, that could add some creativity to your uniform, as could other accessories. The type of sneakers you wear or how you do your hair can also show your individuality. Another bonus:instead of worrying about what clothes you’ll wear to school that day you’ll just know you have to wear your uniform and you won’t feel rushed in the morning.
2. I’m getting NYs in science , how can I get my grade to a MS and how can I keep it there?
You should find some time to go to your science teacher and talk to her/him and ask her/him how you can get a MS. But if you want to pass you need to apply yourself and if you are ever struggling that's what the teachers are there for, to help you if you need help. However, if you want to keep it at MS you are the one who is going to have to apply yourself. The teachers are there to help and give you the knowledge you need, but it’s completely up to you what you do with it.
3. My friends say that going to a single sex school is weird. But are there any benefits to coming to a single sex school?
TYWLS is a single sex school, but that should never be the reason why you wouldn't want to go to a school. TYWLS offers an education that connects to everyday life. The teachers and staff at TYWLS treat us with respect and anytime you need help they are there for you. Another benefit is that starting in 6th grade we hear the word college and what we need to do to get accepted. We are taught to never give up to show the world that we can do this. We are taught that it’s not that you think you can do it ,or you can’t do this or I might go to college. It’s I know I can, I will do this, and I'm going to college. TYWLS of Astoria is a multicultural family that gets their girls ready to take on the world. Think about it, what girl wouldn't want to be advised from the sixth grade on about things she needs to go to college, be thought of as more than just a number but a person, and learn to be a strong independent and empowered young woman.
4. I’m kind of uncomfortable with the fact the we call our teachers by their first name. Why is it that our school has us do that?
We do call our teachers by their first name and it does take some getting used to, but by doing this we create a comfortable relationship between the teachers and the students. It is not a sign of disrespect, but in fact shows the utmost respect, as it helps to build a solid bond between teachers and students.
Remember that if you have any questions or problems you need help in, it doesn’t have to be school related, send us a letter and Dear Lulu will respond.
