Last year, the boys basketball season was one of disappointment, a record most hoped to forget, and one of the biggest player/coach controversies ever seen by Horicon High School. With a new season underway players and coaches hope to set aside past failures and start the season off right with a new attitude, a set of higher expectations, and a hope to end with a winning record.
The new season officially got underway on November 16th, but bouncing balls could be heard weeks prior to this date during open gym after school. This was a time for the boys to work on shooting techniques and help them come into the new season ready to go.
Looking around the gym on November 16th, it was very clear there was one thing missing; Jordan Guenther. As most already know, Jordan Guenther was part of the team until an incident at last year's pep rally left him sitting on the sidelines. It was at the pep rally he decided to flash a Mayville shirt (a stunt he had done many times during the football season) but it was the first time he was reprehended. With a new season starting, Jordan assumed he would be allowed to rejoin the team, but he was in for a rude awaking when Coach B. told him this would not be happening. When asked how he felt about this he told reporters, “When will my punishment end? Kicked off the team, five days out of school suspension, and now I cannot play this year either.. Wtf!” When his hopes to be the girls basketball manager were also denied, he said his new plan is "to run this winter, and run like hell."
With Jordan not returning to the court , that leaves the team with one less returning senior. Even with this set-back, the players are confident they will have a good season.
Seniors Andrew Mueller and Zack Reffke both believe they will have a good team this year. Andy thinks they will be top four in conference and win at least one playoff game. He also added “We are going to win both games versus Mayville!”
In preparation for the season Zack told reporters, “I take a basketball with me almost everywhere I go. I shoot around a lot, and I’ve been running to get in better shape.”
When junior Adam Ruka was asked how he thought the team would be this year his answer was simple but to the point: “Excellent!”
Nick Halsema, a freshman, said he did not prepare himself as much as he would have hoped to for the new season, but he still has confidence that if his team works together they will be successful.
This year Alex Foulkes “Steve” is coming into the season with three goals: become a team leader, improve on defense, and become a better rebounder.
It is unsure how this years boys basketball season will go, but one thing is for certain: according to players, Mayville does not stand a chance.
