Nascar has not always been the most popular sport, but the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing is starting to get more attention in sports media.

With this year’s Nascar circuit just starting, it seems that the usual suspects will be the projected Sprint Cup Champions. With popular names like Dale Earnhart Jr. and Tony Stewart in the top 10 rankings, it seems like the peak of a Nascar driver is longer than any other sport. Big names like Jeff Gordon and Jimmy Johnson are always at the top of the standings, and wins for them are often seen. But not much is known about Nascar from the younger crowd, and so it is hard for it to be a major sport.

Nascar runs on a point system. The amount of points a driver gets is determined in what place he finishes in the race. For first place, a driver is awarded 185 points, for second 170 and for third 165. At the end of the season, the top twelve drivers with the most points make it to a playoff where there is another series of races and previous points are erased. The top driver at the end of the playoffs is awarded the Sprint Cup.

If you have some free time, check out a race and learn how Nascar works because this sport is getting more popular as the years go by, and you don’t want to be left in the dust.
