Another year has quickly come and quickly past here at WHS, and with that so did the athletic teams. It was another successful year for the Wareham Vikings with some sports fielding great teams while wearing the Blue, White and Gold.

The football team finished with a third place standing in the South Coast Conference after a rebuilding year at 7-4. This team faced much adversity after losing 18 seniors and barely having any returning starters. The team has most of its best athletes returning for the 2008 season and the outlook is great for them. “It was a long, tough season, but we all stuck it out and made the season a good one,” says Captain David Johnson.

The boys basketball team won the South Coast Conference Championship this winter. This team dominated most of its opponents by large margins, and even in the playoffs they seemed to just find a way to win in the end.

Their season came to a sad ending when they lost the game in the fourth quarter to Scituate High School in the playoffs. The basketball team will have almost all of their players returning next year with the exception of Stevie Montiero, Aaron Frye and Val Pina. Due to their youth this past season, “No one thought they would be as good as they really were,” says Nick Ryan.

The track team was amazing this year as it defined the word “fast.” With increased participation this year, well over its usual 30 athletes, Wareham tried to exhibit the breadth of their new found depth. They fell one meet short of winning the SCC Championship, only losing to Dighton-Rehoboth. “It was a great run and I really enjoyed throwing for this team this year,” said junior Zach Bergeron.

The Wareham Softball team had another successful year as they returned to the MIAA tournament. It takes only 10 wins to qualify and they finished off the season with exactly 10 wins. The softball world in high school has had to face some diversity having the mounds moved back three feet to the collegiate level pitching distance. This has been a challenge that starting pitcher Bonnie Thorne has had to overcome, and she has done fairly well in doing so. Also, the softball team lost some key players from last year’s highly successful team to graduation.

The Wareham Vikings have had some key moments this year from their other sports such as Volleyball. The boy’s team actually improved this year by winning two games from last year’s winless season.

The winter track team was the same dominating force it was in the spring, and barely lost any meets. The soccer teams both looked for some help from younger players and are looking towards the future in building the program back up. But as the year does end, the school year of 2007-2008 will not only be remembered for in school achievements, but also for the athletic achievements accomplished in the field, court, rink or gym.
