Walking into Wareham High School on the first day of school several students were faced with unprepared schedules and missing classes.
“I had no fifth period class, so I had to go down to the library,” said sophomore Erin McQuade.
Students who had holes in their schedules were asked to report to the library or the cafeteria. Both places allowed students easier access to the guidance office if they needed to switch a class.
Missing classes in students’ schedules came from the online process of applying for courses. Students either had too little credits or signed up for popular electives that were filled. Some students didn’t sign up for enough alternative electives leaving empty slots in their schedules.
The guidance counselors worked quickly to place students in alternate classes.
“There was a mandatory class I signed up for that I didn’t have,” said Raymond Schone whose guidance counselor eventually fixed the problem.
Students weren’t given their schedules in June as in previous years because the new administration wanted to cut down on the add/drop period. They didn’t want students to drop classes because they didn’t like a particular teacher or their friends weren’t in the class with them.
“Things were more hectic and things weren’t as hectic this year. There was a new team trying to adjust and Wareham High School went through changes,” said history teacher, Mr. Collins.
The new administration has a new program that they are aiming for next year – Step-Up Day.
“We want students to step into the classroom that they are going into next year,” said Vice Principal, Mr. Pyy.
With this program, students are going to have a chance to observe the classes that they want to take and get a feel for the course.
