It is the time of year once again for San Diego SCPA to hold the Associated Student Body Elections. On March 26, Applications and Petition Forms will be available in Room 302 for all running candidates. Attached will be the various job descriptions for every position in ASB, including Class Representatives, Commissioners, and Officers. Applicants will have approximately three weeks to complete all of the required paperwork, before they will need to turn them into ASB Advisor, Mr. Timothy Farson.
The Associated Student Body offers the opportunity for students to become more involved with their school and evolve as leaders. Through ASB, students will be expected to construct creative and achievable goals regarding topics including school beautification, school spirit, and fundraising. Not only will students brainstorm various ideas, but they will also be responsible for executing those ideas successfully. Students will be expected to make unselfish decisions that will benefit the entire student body, middle school and high school, as well as the teachers and administrators. ASB Members also learn how to work collaboratively with other students in the class in order to carry out their ideas, as well as establishing relationships with the Administration. Perspective ASB Members will need to be able to commit to their respective jobs in order to fully execute the goals of the class.
If students are interested in being a part of the ASB at SCPA, they will first need to complete all of the written requirements. After Mr. Farson approves the forms, applicants will take part in an interview in front of a panel made up of teachers, students, and members of the Administration. Interviews are necessary in order to get to know the candidates on a more personal level and judge their professionalism and commitment. Each candidate will also be expected to prepare a speech to perform to the entire student body in order to attract students’ votes and gain support. Being a part of the ASB is taken very seriously, reflected through the long and tedious process.
There are a number of different positions in the ASB. For students who are more focused on the entire student body as a whole, fill out a Representative Form. These students do not actually run but are approved by Mr. Farson to be in the class. It is a very similar process for those applying to become a commissioner, which includes the Commissioner of the Arts, Commissioner of Publicity, Commissioner of Spirit, Commissioner of Clubs and Organizations, Commissioner of Community and Professional Development, and Commissioner of the Student Store. These positions are not voted on but are appointed by the ASB Advisor and ASB President. For students that would like to be involved with their respective classes, they need to fill out an Officer Application. Positions include Secretary, Treasurer, Vice President, and President for the Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, and Senior classes. Unlike Representatives and Commissioners, these positions are voted on. Therefore, candidates will be expected to prepare a speech for the Student Body. Lastly, there is the ASB Cabinet for incoming Seniors. The ASB Cabinet includes the Secretary, Treasurer, Vice President, and President as well. However, these positions are of greater importance to the entire school. These students are expected to lead the entire class and act for the entire student body as a whole.
If you are interested in being a part of the 2010-2011 ASB Class, or know anybody that it, please make sure to come by the ASB Room, Mr. Farson’s Room 302 and pick up the Application Packets. These forms will be due by April 16, so please allot yourself enough time to complete them.
