Being a cast member in the Advanced Musical Theater Class presentation of Working was a time consuming, but fun and rewarding experience. The entire cast was required to be at most of the rehearsals that took place after school during the months of February and March, but not until a week before the first performance did we get to practice on stage. Up until then, the ensemble rehearsed in Dance Studio 2. It sounds like it would be impossible to make such a quick transition, but as with most SCPA productions, it all came together during tech weekend.
Mr. Bill Doyle and Mr. Mark Stevens directed the show together. They have the ability to bring out the best in each other as well as the entire cast and crew. Mr. Doyle was primarily in charge of music and performing in the band, while Mr. Stevens directed the performers and created the choreography for the production. The two of them were able to inspire the actors to deliver unique and original portrayals of real life people.
Working is not the conventional type of musical that typically plays in the Florence Johnson Grand Theater. It also appeals to a more mature and seasoned audience. That being said, so many people commented about how moving and entertaining the show was. Numerous individuals said that this was the best production of Working that they have seen.
Thanks to the creative team, the show itself was such a success. It was an amazing opportunity to be a part of Advanced Musical Theater, and to work with such gifted and talented cast and crew members. Everyone gave 100% of themselves to make sure that this play would be memorable for the audience as well as those involved.
