Get ready to dive into another season, Sierra Vista High School’s Swim and Dive season has started again.
Swim and dive coach David Jurvelin always has a goal to qualify swimmers for state.
“We [swim and dive] have a pretty solid girl’s program, so we’re hoping to finish 3 at regionals last year as we did last year,” said Jurvelin.
“We have some strong boys returning as well, so we’d like to improve our standing at regionals on the boy’s side. It is always a goal to qualify swimmers for the State meet.”
Participating SVHS swimmers have been swimming since a young age.
Senior Santiago Ricoy started swimming on a recreational team around 2004/2005. It is his seventh year of swimming on a team.
“In any other sport, you get to breath the whole time, but in swimming you can’t,” said Ricoy as to why he enjoys swimming.
“Plus, we’re using every part of our body in and effort to move through the water.”
Junior Taylor Phillips started competitive swimming when she was ten years old. In her freshman year, 2007/2008, senior Anamey Nava swam with the words of her mother taking her on her way.
This is Juvelin’s seventh year at SVHS coaching Swim and Dive.
“It feels good to be part of a tradition,” said Jurvelin.“I enjoy the kids and watching their times improve over the season, and over their four years swimming here.”
The first dual meet was on March, 19 against Spring Valley High School at Pavilion Pool.
