In an early-season matchup with rival Seneca, the wrestling Rocks secured a 48-27 victory over the Redhawks.
The dual meet was held Dec. 15 at Seneca High School. The win gave the Rocks one of the 16 berths for the state duals to be held on Feb. 5 at Henry Clay High School.
In a dual meet, all 14 weight classes from each of the two schools are pitted against each other using a standard scoring method. The Redhawks did not field a wrestler in the 160-pound class.
Junior Michael Clark recorded a pin over Seneca’s Jordan Dockery in the 275-pound weight class, and senior Tony McDermott tallied a pin in his match in the 171-pound class.
“We wrestled decently tonight,” Trinity head coach Eddie Rudolph said. “Our young guys looked good, especially Dan Smith in the 103-pound class (who prevailed in a 14-9 decision). Those were matches we had to win in order to take this meet.”
With the heart of the season on the horizon, including two meets in Evansville before the new year, the team looks poised for success in the regular season.
“The team is really starting to come together as a whole,” Clark said.
Despite the win, Rudolph expressed some concerns about the rest of the way. “We really need to work on our hand control,” he said, “to take advantage of the pin when given the opportunity and work on our basic wrestling skills.”
