Some Trinity students gather at Tom Sawyer Park along with other kids their age to play a sport that originated in England.

The Louisville Red Devils are a local rugby team that travels and plays teams from Ohio in the 19-and-under age division.

Although the season begins in March, practice has already started.

“We have new players come in a lot and not everyone shows up for every practice, so we have to get ready,” senior Jon Lohman said. “Not everyone knows really how to play, either.”

Rugby is similar to football, but players can only gain ground by running with the ball or punting it. There are also two ways to score, a goal and a try. A goal is kicking the ball between a crossbar. A try is touching the ball over the opponents’ line at the end of the field.

“It’s like football but no stops or breaks. We always are running, and halftime is only about 10 minutes,” Lohman said.

The sport is a hit to many, and guys like Zach Slayton started to play out of curiosity.

“I’ve never played before, but it was interesting and I thought I should come out and see what it was,” Slayton said. “I’m ready to start playing.”
